The Concept:
“Blackbird” is a mural created during the 5th Annual Sunny Dayz Mural Festival in Oklahoma City. Inspired by the iconic lyrics of The Beatles’ "Blackbird," this piece is a visual interpretation of resilience, freedom, and strength found in community.
Two blackberry branches—wild, rooted, and flourishing—anchor the composition, symbolizing both heritage and healing. Between them, broken chains break and fall away, representing freedom. It speaks to the power of reclaiming one’s identity and rising above adversity.
Set against the political backdrop of unjust daily raids tearing apart families and positioned in one of Oklahoma’s vibrant Hispanic communities, Calle Dos Cinco, “Blackbird” was not intended to be just another mural—it’s a meditation on growth, struggle, and the unyielding human spirit.
